Description

The proposed operation should significantly contribute to the rehabilitation of one of the major axes of the country's structuring network, namely the Yaoundé - Bafoussam - Bamenda route. It is the natural extension of the Bamenda-Enugu road corridor that is nearing completion on multi-source financing under the Bank's leadership, and serves as a transit corridor for trade between Cameroon and Nigeria in particular and between the CEMAC/EECAC and ECOWAS zones in general. Considering the said programme’s scale of works, relative to available resources, it was agreed that Bank intervention should be in phases. The first phase, covering the Batschenga-Ntui-Yoko-Lena segment (248.60 km) and approved in November 2014. The second phase concerns: (i) the rehabilitation of the Yaoundé-Bafoussam-Babadjou road; (ii) the development of the Maroua-Bogo-Pouss and Grand Zambi-Kribi roads; and (iii) ancillary socio-economic activities. The implementation period of this phase of the programme is 4 years and its total cost is estimated at UA 361.890 million. At the level of sectoral governance, technical assistance is provided for the institutional strengthening of the Ministry of Public Works, the main contracting authority and the state engineer in the design and implementation of the implementation of major projects. Finally, the current project will assist the government in the implementation of a sustainable road heritage management system in Cameroon as well as technical assistance for the implementation of the GENIS level of service road maintenance method.
