Cameroon - Territorial Development and Private Sector promotion Project in the Far North Region

This operation concerns the Territorial Development and Private Sector promotion Project in the Far North Region. The aim of this operation is to help improve transport services in the Lake Chad Basin in general and the Far-North Region of Cameroon in particular. The rehabilitation of the Moutourwa - Maroua and Magada - Yagoua road sections, as well as the urban roads of Maroua and the other localities crossed, should lead to smoother, safer traffic and, consequently, a substantial increase in trade between Cameroon, Nigeria and Chad, particularly by linking the towns of Garoua and Maroua to the town of Bongor in southern Chad via Yagoua, using the bridge over the River Logone currently being constructed with co-financing from the Bank and the European Union. This project will thus help to resolve the problem of mobility, one of the main constraints to the development of the high potential of its impact area, particularly in the agricultural sector, and ultimately to improve the living conditions of the local population. It should help (i) promoting trade between these countries; (ii) improving traffic flow on the regional corridors between Cameroon and Chad; (iii) reducing travel times and transport costs, and improving road safety; (iv) creating conditions conducive to the optimal exploitation of the production areas identified in the region; (vi) reducing poverty and improving living conditions for the people of the region; (v) improving regional and national integration through efficient road infrastructure on the sections of these accessibility-enhancing corridors; and (vi) improving the people’s resilience to security and climatic shocks. The main components of the project are: (1) development of resilient infrastructures, (2) promotion of the private sector, (3) activities to support resilience and vulnerability and (4) project management and coordination. The project contributes to climate finance, with 86 million USD of the total approved amount dedicated to adaptation.
