Overview

The Ring Road is a major sovereign road programme covering approximately 365 km in Cameroon’s North-West Region. The route loops through Bamenda, Bambui, Ndop, Babessi, Kumbo, Nkambe, Misaje, Nyos, Wum and Bafut, crossing five of the region’s seven divisions and providing connections toward Nigeria, particularly from Misaje.

The programme is intended to improve movement of people and goods, open agricultural and other production areas, reduce transport constraints and strengthen domestic and cross-border trade. Its scope combines road works with local infrastructure, support for women and young people, institutional support and programme management.

Implementation is phased. Current AfDB data classify the project as under implementation with planned completion on 31 December 2029. On the 88 km Kumbo–Ndu–Nkambe–Misaje corridor, Ndu–Nkambe is effectively complete while Kumbo–Ndu and Nkambe–Misaje remain under construction.

Financing

The programme is financed through sovereign public-infrastructure loans and government counterpart funding. AfDB financing was structured in two instalments: an initial €17.96 million loan approved in November 2018 and a second €161.60 million instalment.

The programme also includes a €42.60 million Africa Growing Together Fund loan and documented Government of Cameroon counterpart funding. Financing is approved and implementation and disbursement remain ongoing.
