Tanzania - Submarine Cable to Zanzibar Project

In 1964, the Republic of Tanganyika and the Republic of Zanzibar (Unguja and Pemba Islands) merged to form the United Republic of Tanzania with Zanzibar as a semi-autonomous region. Under the Tanzania Development Vision 2025, and Zanzibar Development Vision 2050, the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania aims at achieving a high-quality livelihood for its people, develop a strong and competitive economy and become a middle-income country. The third and final Five-year National Development Plan (FYDP III) 2021/22 – 2025/26 and Zanzibar Development Plan (2021-2026) are designed to fulfil these aspirations. The proposed Tanzania: Submarine Power Cable to Zanzibar Project (the “Project”) is one of the interventions under the “economic growth” pillar of the FYDP III to realize an inclusive and competitive economy by improving the availability and reliability of electricity supply. The Project is also prioritized in the Mission 3003: National Energy Compact for Tanzania approved in January 2025. This intervention is directly aligned with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) No. 7 - ensuring access to reliable electricity services, SDG 9 - building resilient and sustainable infrastructure, SDG 13 – taking action to combat climate change, SDG 3 - ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all, and SDG 8 - promoting inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, and decent productive employment. The project is affiliated with the African Union Agenda 2063 focusing on inclusive growth and sustainable development.
