Tanzania - Enhancing Climate Resilience on Water Resources in Mkondoa Catchment

The Climate Resilient Water Resources in Mkondoa Catchment Project is a water resources and climate adaptation operation in Tanzania designed to strengthen the resilience of the Mkondoa catchment to the adverse effects of climate change, especially recurrent floods and droughts. The project combines institutional strengthening and hydrometeorological monitoring, climate-resilient infrastructure and ecosystem restoration, and project management. It will finance the construction and rehabilitation of hydrometeorological and water-quality monitoring stations, groundwater exploration and development, river training and riverbank stabilization works, rehabilitation and construction of dikes, restoration of degraded catchment ecosystems, and community-based ecosystem adaptation activities such as fish ponds, tree nurseries, agroforestry, beekeeping and livestock watering points. The total project cost is estimated at UA 10.705 million (USD 14.024 million), financed by an ADF Climate Action Window grant of UA 7.164 million (USD 9.384 million) and a Government of Tanzania counterpart contribution of UA 3.542 million (USD 4.640 million) in cash and in kind. The executing agency is the Ministry of Water, and the implementing agency is the Wami/Ruvu Basin Water Board.
