This project concerns a grant of five hundred thousand US dollars (USD 500,000) in emergency humanitarian assistance to the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, financed from the resources of the Special Relief Fund, to assist returnee refugees and host communities in Hodh El Charqui. Mauritania continues to receive an increasing influx of Malian migrants as the security situation in the country of origin deteriorates. With Mauritanian refugee camps overcrowded, refugees and returnees are settling in nearby towns, putting pressure on water supply and sanitation systems due to rapid population growth. The proposed intervention is based on the recommendations of the Humanitarian Charter and the Sphere Minimum Standards in Humanitarian Response. The grant will be used to expand sanitation and hygiene services coverage for refugees, returnees, and host communities affected by the refugee crisis in at least ten project localities. The operation will be implemented by UNICEF, in collaboration with all parties involved in the response, over a period of six (6) months.
