Overview

The Niumi–Hakalang Loop & Secondary Roads project is a major rural-road upgrade in The Gambia's North Bank Region, covering the Nuimi and Jokadou districts. It replaced a deteriorated gravel-road network dating from the 1970s with approximately 84.7 km of paved roads connecting more than 30 communities.

The works comprise three principal sections linking Buniadu to Kuntaya, Albreda to Fass Omar Sahor, and the Banghaly/Ker Mbeuguma area to Medina Bafuloto. The infrastructure includes bituminous pavement, shoulders, drainage and road-safety equipment. The Government of The Gambia funded the project from domestic resources.

After several implementation extensions, the project was completed and officially inaugurated on 8 November 2025. Government sources subsequently identify the Niumi–Hakalang Road as a completed national-road project.

Financing

The project was financed by the Government of The Gambia. At inauguration, the Presidency stated that the Government had funded the entire road project and acknowledged the Ministry of Finance for mobilising the required resources. Earlier official reporting also described the North Bank road programme as being implemented mainly through local resources.
