Cameroon’s state-owned power utility Socadel is seeking CFA200 billion from local banks to strengthen its cash position and refinance existing debt, part of an effort to ease financial pressure that affects payments across the country’s electricity sector. On August 31, Socadel signed a mandate in Yaoundé with General Bank of Cameroon (GBC), Afriland First Bank and BGFIBank Cameroon to structure and syndicate two credit facilities worth a combined CFA200 billion. Cameroon’s cost of short-term borrowing on the CEMAC government securities market reached a new high in July 2026, underscoring how much more expensive it has become for the government to raise funds through a market that has been a major source of financing since 2019. Cameroon paid an average interest rate of 6.97% on Treasury bills during the month, according to data from the Bank of Central African States (BEAC). Tradex has overtaken SCTM as Cameroon’s largest cooking gas distributor by volume, while the market continues to grow and SCTM faces supply problems linked to debts owed to LPG importers. A total of 132,902 tons of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) was released for consumption between January and July 2026, up 6.2% from 125,085 tons over the same period in 2025, according to market data obtained by Business in Cameroon. Tradex ranked first with 18,772 tons, or 14.12% of the market. SCTM followed with 17,692 tons and a 13.31% share. Cameroon’s Water Utility Turns to Smart Meters to Recover More Revenue
Cameroon’s state-owned water utility Camwater has awarded Chinese company Hangzhou Laison Technology Company Limited a CFA721.76 million contract to deploy 3,000 smart water meters, the first batch of a much larger program designed to improve billing and recover more revenue. The decision was signed on August 17, 2026, by Camwater Managing Director Blaise Moussa and published on August 26 by the Public Procurement Regulatory Agency (ARMP).
