Zambia · Nationwide · Health

Overview

The Zambia Health Emergency Preparedness, Response and Resilience Project is a US$50 million national health-system resilience programme designed to strengthen Zambia’s capacity to prevent, detect and respond to health emergencies. It forms part of the World Bank’s regional Health Emergency Preparedness, Response and Resilience Multiphase Programmatic Approach for Eastern and Southern Africa.

The project combines health-workforce development, digital health and surveillance systems, emergency referral and transport capacity, medical equipment, resilient primary healthcare infrastructure, community engagement and climate-related health preparedness. It also includes a contingent emergency response mechanism allowing uncommitted project resources to be redirected following an eligible crisis or emergency.

The World Bank approved the operation on 13 June 2024. The financing agreement was signed on 4 September 2024 and the project became effective in September 2024. Its scheduled closing date is 30 June 2029. Implementation and procurement are ongoing; the World Bank disclosed a revised procurement plan on 23 September 2026.
