Chad Rural Mobility and Connectivity Project — Chad

Chad · Mandoul and Moyen-Chari provinces · Transport

Overview

The Chad Rural Mobility and Connectivity Project (P164747) was a rural transport infrastructure programme financed by the International Development Association. Its objective was to improve sustainable access to markets and basic social services for rural communities in Mandoul and Moyen-Chari provinces in southern Chad.

Approved in December 2018 with an initial amount equivalent to US$30 million, the project received US$15 million in additional financing in 2020, bringing total IDA allocation to US$45 million. Its scope included rural-road rehabilitation and maintenance, the Bédaya bridge over the Mandoul River, community road-maintenance arrangements, intermediate means of transport, community infrastructure and institutional strengthening.

The closing date was extended from 30 June 2025 to 30 April 2026 to allow remaining road, bridge and community-infrastructure works to be completed. Near closure, some works could no longer absorb all available resources; US$1.5 million in uncommitted financing was therefore cancelled.

Financing

The project was financed by International Development Association grants. The original operation was SDR 21.8 million, approximately US$30 million at approval. After the emergency-response component was activated in 2020 for the socioeconomic effects of COVID-19, additional financing of SDR 10.7 million, then equivalent to US$15 million, replenished project resources.

At closure, SDR 766,500 under IDA-D4170 and SDR 328,500 under IDA-D7580 were cancelled, totalling SDR 1.095 million or approximately US$1.5 million. These were uncommitted resources that could no longer be used before project closing.
