Description

This intervention relates to the Development of the Nubian Sandstone Table for Climate Change Resilience (NUREC) (PPF Phase). The project is in line with the national strategic planning document "the 2030 vision of the Chad we want", which reflects the will and decision of the highest authorities of the Republic of Chad and the desire and commitment to build long-term development in order to meet the legitimate aspirations of the population. The Nubian Sandstone Aquifer Development Project is a Chadian government initiative aimed at exploiting the fresh groundwater resources in northern Chad, which is a desert area. The level of knowledge of these resources is limited to scant data from summary hydrogeological investigations carried out in the project area. However, interpolations of data from neighbouring countries (Libya, Egypt and Sudan) and satellite data confirm the importance of these water resources. The Bank's current contribution will help finance detailed technical studies to gain a better understanding of the Nubian Sandstone fossil aquifer, with a view to developing it not only for drinking water supply, but also for other income-generating activities in the agricultural and livestock sectors, to ensure that the people of Chad remain resilient to climate change in the long term.
