Description

The Mnivata Newala Masasi (160 Km) Road Upgrading Project was designed to improve the accessibility of the 816 km long Mtwara Development Corridor (MDC) commencing from Mtwara to Mnivata up to Mbamba Bay on Lake Nyasa. The intervention is an investment project aligned to Tanzania’s FYDP III. This is for upgrading the 160 km road to bituminous standard including 84 m Mwiti Bridge and complementary initiatives. The project is expected to improve accessibility of the people and goods in the zone of influence to economic centers and social services, foster trade, integration and economic development and eventually lead to reduction in poverty and enhanced resilience in the subcoastal region of Mtwara and beyond. The expected outcomes include: (a) reduced transport costs and travel times; (b) employment generation during construction and post construction phases; (c) increased agricultural production, increased investment and trading activities that will subsequently contribute to increased incomes and eventually reduction in poverty and enhanced resilience; and (d) improved road safety.
