Sudan Basic Education Support Project — Sudan
Sudan · Nationwide · Education
Overview
The Sudan Basic Education Support Project, identified by the World Bank as P167169, was a national basic-education programme approved in November 2020. It aimed to increase enrolment and retention for girls and boys and improve early-grade reading proficiency, with priority given to disadvantaged schools.
The programme combined school-level interventions—school grants, textbooks and reading support—with stronger education systems, including national learning assessment, the annual school census and education-policy development. A results-based financing component was also intended to support reforms in learning, equity and system efficiency.
Implementation was interrupted following the political events of October 2021 and application of the World Bank policy on de facto governments. In February 2024, US$52.4 million of the original US$61.5 million grant was cancelled. The project closed on 30 April 2025.
