Somalia - Building Resilience to Climate Change through WASH in Qardho, Dollow and South Galkayo

The Ministry of Energy and Water Resources (MoEWR) of the Federal Republic of Somalia (FRS) will implement and coordinate the Climate Resilience Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Project in South Galkacyo District and particularly in Horyal Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp. Since 1991, Somalia has faced conflicts, political instability, governance challenges, and climate-related disasters. By 2023, the country had approximately 3.9 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) due to conflicts and violence, ranking it among the ten countries worldwide with the highest number of conflict-induced IDPs. The influx of displaced persons into relatively stable areas has increased pressure on already scarce and poorly functioning WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) services in three cities and their surrounding areas. The cities of Qardho, Dollow, and South Galkayo, with populations of 100,000, 86,000, and 305,000 respectively, also host 20,000 (across six camps), 134,000 (across five camps), and 29,000 (across four camps) displaced persons. The project contributes to climate finance, with 5 million USD of the total approved amount dedicated to adaptation.
