Description

This operation concerns the Chimoio Inclusive Urban Sanitation Project. The proposed project will be the first investment in the water and sanitation sector in Mozambique approved by the Bank since November 2010. It will ultimately contribute to a reduction in the incidence of water-borne diseases, reduce river and soil pollution and promote the reuse of treated water and sludge for agricultural purposes. The people of Chimoio will be able to use better-quality, climate-resilient sanitation facilities, have their wastewater treated safely and benefit from a wastewater treatment plant that treats faecal matter from the municipality's on-site sanitation facilities. The project will comprise three components: i) development of a sanitation infrastructure; ii) design studies for the water supply to the towns of Cuamba and Lichinga; iii) institutional strengthening and project management. The project contributes to climate finance, with 13 million USD of the total approved amount dedicated to adaptation.
