Description

The proposed operation is the Bank Group’s response to the appeal by the Government of Malawi for urgent humanitarian assistance following the declaration of a State of Disaster in 23districts across the country due tothe devastation caused by El Nino. This disaster occurs at a time when Malawi is still recovering from the Cyclone Freddy which claimed more than 600lives, displaced more than 114,637 households, led to more than 500 people missing, and damaged both public and private properties. The Government is also still trying to recover from the impactsof the Tropical Cyclones Anna and Gombe, Covid 19 pandemic and the most severe Cholera outbreaks that claimed more than 1,607 lives across the country.In addition to these disasters and the public health issues, Malawi is currently facing significant macroeconomic challenges under a heavy debt burdenand immense fiscal pressure.
