Lesotho - Urban Distribution Rehabilitation and Transmission Expansion Project

The Urban Distribution Rehabilitation and Transmission Expansion Project is part of the medium-term energy sector investment program approved by the Government of Lesotho for the period 2016-2020. It aims to improve the reliability and quality of electricity supply to customers. The proposed intervention focuses on expanding access, rehabilitation and improvement of the electricity supply system. The improvement in the reliability and availability of the distribution network is to be achieved through rehabilitation of existing electricity supply switching stations, primarily in the municipality of Maseru, rehabilitation of some 33 kV lines, substation upgrade and construction of a 132 kV line to augment supply. The project will also conduct an electricity cost-of-service study and preparation of an energy resources map. Its implementation will allow to renovate and strengthen the electricity distribution network, which will lead to positive impacts on power losses and power cuts, which will reduce their impact by 2% and 25% (resp.), With to the key a network availability up 5%.
