Liquefied Natural Gas Fired Power Plant at Dongo Kundu — Kenya
Kenya · Dongo Kundu · Mombasa · Energy
Overview
The Government of Kenya is preparing a liquefied-natural-gas-fired power plant at Dongo Kundu in Mombasa. The project under study provides for final capacity of up to 1,200 MW, developed in phases, together with the infrastructure required to import and deliver LNG.
The project is being considered as a public-private partnership under a potential Build, Own and Operate or Build, Own, Operate and Transfer structure. The scope under study includes the generating plant, LNG-import infrastructure potentially incorporating a floating storage and regasification unit, marine facilities and associated pipelines.
The Project Concept Note was approved in March 2026, allowing the project to move to feasibility study. A competitive process was then launched to recruit a transaction adviser to update the feasibility study, review PPP structuring and support preparation through financial close. The PPP Directorate now marks that procurement process as closed.
