Overview

The Gambia Agriculture and Food Security Project is a sovereign programme designed to increase food and nutrition security and household incomes, particularly for vulnerable households. It links climate-resilient smallholder production to structured demand from the national Home-Grown School Feeding programme, creating an institutional market for locally produced food. It covers Central River, Lower River, Upper River, North Bank and West Coast regions.

The original operation was supported by a US$16 million Global Agriculture and Food Security Program grant. In March 2024, a further US$12 million GAFSP grant was approved to expand production areas, farmer coverage, school feeding, post-harvest infrastructure and nutrition interventions. GAFSP reports US$28 million in programme grant funding.

Both the original and additional-financing operations remain classified as ongoing in current African Development Bank data. The original operation is scheduled through 30 April 2027 and the additional-financing operation through 31 December 2027.

Financing

The financing structure is grant-led. The original operation comprised a US$16 million GAFSP grant, approximately US$1.37 million in government counterpart funding and approximately US$1.13 million in beneficiary in-kind contributions, for a US$18.5 million total cost.

The 2024 expansion adds a US$12 million GAFSP grant and requires no separate counterpart financing. GAFSP therefore reports US$28 million of grant resources across the two operations. Continued disbursements were recorded under both operations in 2026.
