Burkina Faso - Climato-resilient water and sanitation study project

Burkina Faso has been facing a deteriorating security and humanitarian situation since 2015. To address this, the Transition Government has identified priority actions to be carried out as part of its missions. Divided into four (04) pillars, namely (i) combating terrorism and restoring territorial integrity, (ii) responding to the humanitarian crisis, (iii) rebuilding the State and improving governance and (iv) working towards national reconciliation and social cohesion, these actions form the basis of the country's Action Plan for Stabilization and Development (PA-SD), adopted on January 25, 2023 by the Transition Government for the period 2023-2025. The main achievements of the Environment, Water and Sanitation (EWSS) sector concern the improvement in access to drinking water at national level, which rose from 73.4% in 2017 to 76.3% in 2022, and the improvement in access to wastewater and excreta sanitation at national level, which rose from 21.6% in 2017 to 27.5% in 2022. Some 23.7% of the population had no access to drinking water and 72.5% practiced open defecation. The limited availability of water resources is one of the main obstacles to the development of urban water supply in Burkina Faso. This is due to natural factors such as hydrogeology, climate and relief. Indeed, Burkina Faso is largely based on a geological structure of crystalline bedrock, which is not conducive to the formation of consistent water tables capable of meeting urban demand. As a result, the water deficit of secondary towns is increasing as they develop. The project will be implemented over a period of twenty-four (24) months, at an estimated total cost of two million seven hundred and fourteen thousand six hundred and twenty-eight (2714,628) units of account, including activities related to the operation of the Project Management Unit (PMU). The project is financed to the tune of two million one hundred and seventy-seven thousand nine hundred and five (2177,905) units of account, i.e. 80% from ADF PPF resources. The contribution of the Government of Burkina Faso amounts to five hundred and thirty-six thousand seven hundred and twenty-three (536723) units of account, i.e. 20% of the total cost of the study project.
