Container Corridor Project — South Africa

South Africa · Gauteng–KwaZulu-Natal corridor · City Deep–Port of Durban · Transport and logistics

Overview

The Container Corridor Project is a rail modernisation and restoration programme for South Africa’s principal freight corridor linking the Port of Durban with the Gauteng economic hub. It is intended to increase available rail slots and freight volumes through track, formation and signalling upgrades while preparing the corridor for private-sector participation.

National Treasury lists the project in the Infrastructure Fund pipeline with estimated potential total investment of R4.7 billion. In the 2026 Budget Review, feasibility and associated studies were being finalised. Transnet is also preparing a bankable feasibility business case and transaction structure, while government expected the private-sector-participation transaction to advance to market during 2026.

The corridor carries containers, automotive products, fuel, grain, chemicals, coal and general freight between Durban and Gauteng. Transnet describes the operational corridor as a 688 km rail network serving inland terminals including City Deep, Kascon, Pretcon and Kaalfontein.
